{"id":20869,"date":"2025-10-02T11:45:06","date_gmt":"2025-10-02T10:45:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.everett-art.co.uk\/shop\/?post_type=product&#038;p=20869"},"modified":"2026-08-10T17:12:30","modified_gmt":"2026-08-10T16:12:30","slug":"nicolas-francois-octave-tassaert","status":"publish","type":"product","link":"https:\/\/everett-art.co.uk\/gallery\/product\/nicolas-francois-octave-tassaert\/","title":{"rendered":"Nicolas-Fran\u00e7ois Octave Tassaert"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Biography<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Born<\/strong>: 26 July 1800, Paris, France.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Died<\/strong>: 24 April 1874, Paris.<\/li>\n<li>He came from a long line of artists of Flemish origin: his father Jean\u2011Joseph\u2011Fran\u00e7ois Tassaert was an engraver; his grandfather Jean\u2011Pierre\u2011Antoine Tassaert was a sculptor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Training &amp; Early Career<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Early training with his father and his older brother, Paul, both in engraving and dealing in prints.<\/li>\n<li>In 1816 he studied under Alexis\u2011Fran\u00e7ois Girard (engraver).<\/li>\n<li>From 1817 to 1825 he studied at the \u00c9cole des Beaux\u2011Arts, under the painter Guillaume Guillon Lethi\u00e8re.<\/li>\n<li>He made an unsuccessful attempt to win the Prix de Rome around 1823\u201324, which affected him deeply.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Subject matter:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Genre scenes showing the lives of the poor, social miseries, abandoned women, children in hardship, illness, family despair, suicide. These are often deeply emotional, occasionally melodramatic.<\/li>\n<li>Religious, historical, allegorical works as well.
