The Artist
Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680) was a Dutch-born painter who became the leading portraitist in 17th-century England.
Serving as court painter to both Charles I and Charles Il, he was known for his elegant, sensuous portraits that defined the style of the Restoration court. Lely’s refined compositions and soft, flattering realism made him one of the most influential artists of his era.
