The Artist

Pieter van Bloemen (1657-1720) was a Flemish painter celebrated for his dynamic landscapes, equestrian scenes, and depictions of Italianate countryside life. Born in Antwerp, he was part of a family of artists and spent several years in Rome, where he earned the nickname “Standaart” for his frequent inclusion of military standards in his works. His paintings are admired for their lively compositions, warm light, and finely detailed horses and figures, blending Flemish precision with the golden glow of the Italian landscape tradition.
