The Artist

Thomas Hudson (1701-1779) was a prominent English portraitist whose poised, formal style bridged the Baroque tradition and emerging Georgian elegance. A pupil of Jonathan Richardson and teacher of Joshua Reynolds, Hudson was admired for his balanced compositions and meticulous attention to costume and likeness. His work shaped mid-eighteenth-century portraiture and influenced a new generation of artists.
