The Artist

William Derby (1786–1847) was an English portrait and miniature painter known for his refined draftsmanship and sensitive likenesses. Born in Birmingham, he trained under the engraver Joseph Barber before establishing himself in London. Derby exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy, producing portraits, miniatures, and watercolours that were admired for their elegance and clarity. He was also commissioned to make many careful copies of Old Master paintings for use in engraved reproductions, a task at which he excelled due to his precision and fidelity to detail. His son, Alfred Derby, later followed him into the profession. William Derby’s work remains appreciated for its technical skill and insight into early-19th-century British portraiture.
